A tragic shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, has left three children and a teacher dead, prompting grief and shock across the local community. The 16-year-old suspected gunman was also killed after a community member confronted him inside the school, according to police.

The incident occurred on Thursday, October 15, 2026, shortly before 1 p.m. local time. Police identified the three children who died as being aged five, eight and 11. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were taken to hospital with critical injuries.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the teenage suspect was a local resident. Authorities have not released his identity or established a motive for the attack. Investigators are also examining whether the suspect had any connection to the school.

According to police, the incident began when a person driving a red pickup truck noticed an individual carrying a long gun near the school. The suspect allegedly fired several shots at the vehicle, damaging its rear window and leaving multiple bullet holes. The driver contacted emergency services at approximately 12:59 p.m.

Police subsequently received multiple emergency calls reporting that an armed individual had entered the school. Investigators said the suspect fired at locked doors to force his way inside.

A community member who witnessed the unfolding incident reportedly pursued the suspect into the school and confronted him, fatally shooting him before police officers arrived. The first officers reached the scene within minutes, confirmed the suspect was dead and began searching the building for further threats.

Emergency responders treated the injured victims and transported the critically wounded child and teacher to St. Charles Medical Center. Authorities said the families of the victims had been notified.

The shooting triggered an extensive emergency response involving the Bend Police Department, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office, Redmond Police and Bend Fire & Rescue. Nearby schools were temporarily placed under lockdown as authorities secured the area.

Students at Silver Rail Elementary were evacuated and transported to a designated family reunification centre at Journey Church, where parents gathered anxiously to locate their children. Families described the hours of uncertainty as deeply distressing.

The school, which serves approximately 450 children and has more than 40 adult staff members, was scheduled to remain closed on Friday. Officials also arranged crisis counselling services to support affected families, students, teachers and community members.

Oregon Governor Tina Kotek expressed sympathy for those affected and praised the community member who intervened, acknowledging the emotional burden associated with the incident.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about gun violence and school safety in the United States. Data cited in the reports indicate that hundreds of shooting incidents have occurred on American school grounds in recent years.

Police said the investigation would continue for several days as officers worked to establish the full sequence of events and determine the circumstances behind the attack. Authorities have not yet announced a motive.

The incident has left the Bend community mourning the loss of young lives and a teacher, while families, educators and officials face the difficult task of supporting survivors and recovering from the traumatic event.
